Selection of the Best video game websites

Posted on February 13, 2010, in Inspiration

The gaming industry has seen incredible technological advancement over the last 5 – 10 years, because of such rapid changes, the websites which support them must be just as cutting edge.

Gaming websites give designers the opportunity to be creative and develop something outstanding… using in-game graphics, sound and animation. Many of the sites featured below contain amazing illustrations and amazing Flash animation. Flash has enabled these developers to push the boundaries of what’s possible on the web by combing video, audio, animation and illustrations, to create an immersive experience. They deserve to be taken seriously – Flash certainly still has a place on the web.

1. Moto GP

The Moto GP website utilizes flash to create an inspiring user experience. It was chosen based on it’s excellent artwork and flash animation.

2. World Of Warcraft

The artwork incorporated in the World of Warcraft Cataclysm website is stunning. The website looks great as a static image but be sure to check out the flash and how it benefits the overall image.

3. Battlefield – Bad Company 2

Like many of the other video game websites, the Battlefield website uses great artwork. However, we especially liked the attention to detail, textures are very subtle to give a clean grunge feel – the website gives you a feel of pixel perfection.

4. Crysis

We didn’t feel the layout for the Crysis website was breaking any boundaries but we really enjoyed the flash animation and the excellent ‘Exoskeleton’.

5. Burnout Paradise

We like the colour contrast on the Burnout website, the use of white space is nice and again the artwork doesn’t fail to impress.

6. Bioshock 2

This website needs to be visited to really enjoy it. The full-screen option amazed us in both the beauty and the technicality – as gaming websites go, this is among the best we have seen.

7. Tekken 6

The arcade style to the website has been pulled off very well. It incorporates some good images from the game itself and houses them in a very nice grunge surrounding. Aside from the asthetics, the site provides a lot of feedback to user actions and feels very exciting.

8. I Am Alive

The layout is very nice primarily because it is following the exact theme of the game. The artwork used in the background almost creates the entire layout, the textures are very nice and overall it is just enjoyable to look at.

9. Guitar Hero

This website has so many small features which sometimes only as a developer you notice. Every element is positioned to complement one another, while small details such as background noise give the layout some depth.

10. DJ Hero

DJ Hero breaks the mould a little bit. The website doesn’t entirely use flash and there isn’t any textures to be found. We like the clean and sleek look of the layout, the subtle gradients are the main contributors to this. The header is also composed very well.

11. Halo

The header and footer of the Halo website combine lighting with texture for a really nice look, it must be seen in full size to appreciate.

12. Operation Flashpoint 2

Unique layout made Operation Flashpoint stand out. Colours, textures and sound give the website an ‘army’ feel which compliments the images and the game itself.

13. Call of Duty – Modern Warfare 2

Call of Duty may be the king of all games but we chose this website for our collection for other reasons. The website makes use of jQuery which really provides a lot more information without making the website feel crowded. The layout feels clean and sleek – time has been spent perfecting small details such as shiny buttons and the effort appears to of paid off.

14. Fuel

Nice use of texture, has a grunge feel to it which isn’t over done. Enjoyable multi-screen display on the home page but loading times were poor.
